This text is specifically dedicated to the creation of the Sala de Reflexión that he created for the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona in 1995.

Antoni Tàpies, Pompeu Fabra University.

Faced with the excesses of agitation, mental dispersion and countless cults of “false realities” to which we are subjected in today’s societies, it seemed to me very opportune to contribute to the creation of a space and images that favour recollection, concentration and, in short, a better approach to our true nature.

There is a whole tradition of beliefs that practices and advises this possible modification of the primary level of consciousness to bring it to the most authentic areas of being. These are techniques which, adapted to the present day, can even be considered a therapy of great importance to our balance, and in fact the main trunk of the art of all times has not only always been its ally, but is often the main element.

At a time when we are so dominated by the “cultures” of distraction and business, when even some museums are becoming bustling and often alienating mass spectacles, I think it is very significant that from the university world we remember the need for some spaces of silence and reflection with which art can exercise its most noble and surely most useful functions for the citizens.
