Tornei, feste, arazzi, fiabe mitologiche. Scambi tra Nord e Sud (primo Rinascimento, Firenze, le Fiandre | XV-XVI secolo)
Un ulteriore tipo di mascheramento che ha consentito alle immagini pagane dell’Antico di sopravvivere: il costume alla franzese, ovvero quel “realismo nordico” caratteristico dell’epica e del romanzo cavalleresco. Veicoli di questa trasmissione sono le fabulae mitologiche, i testi classici volgarizzati e moralizzati, ma anche i manufatti artistici minori, gli oggetti d’uso come cassoni e arazzi o, ancora, le testimonianze delle feste e del folklore popolare. Nell’intreccio fra riemersione dei soggetti antichi e rappresentazione della vita contemporanea, due casi paradigmatici: gli scambi artistici – ma anche economici, sociali, culturali – tra la Firenze medicea e le Fiandre, e la composta monumentalità dell’Antico nello stile di Piero della Francesca.

Tournaments, Festivals, Tapestries and Mythological tales. Exchanges between North and South (Early Renaissance, Firenze, Flanders | 15th-16th centuries)
The pagan imaginary of Antiquity could also survive through another kind of disguise: the “costume alla franzese” (thus Warburg), or the “Northern realism” characteristic of the epic and the chivalric novel. The vehicles of this transmission include mythological tales, vulgarised and moralised Classical texts, as well as small artistic artefacts, and everyday objects such as cassoni and tapestries, along with testimonies of festivals and popular folklore. Two paradigmatic examples illustrate the interweaving of ancient themes and the representation of contemporary life: the artistic – but also economic, social and cultural – exchange between the Medici family from Firenze and Flanders, and the calm monumentality of Antiquity in the style of Piero della Francesca.
